Ranking methodology

NIRFRank preserves the rank, score and ranking-pillar values published in official NIRF tables, then adds navigation and analysis layers.

Published ranks and scores

A category-year page represents one imported official NIRF ranking edition. The displayed rank and score come from that edition; NIRFRank does not create a composite or substitute rank.

If a source value is unavailable, it remains unavailable instead of being estimated.

Identity matching and ownership

Ranking rows are linked to institution profiles using official identifiers where available and reviewed name, alias and location matches. Unresolved rows remain unlinked rather than being assigned to a guessed institution.

Private and government filters use the verified institution classification stored in the NIRFRank database. Unclassified institutions are not silently placed into either group.

Trends and comparisons

  • Rank movement compares published appearances for the same matched institution and category.
  • A positive movement means the numerical rank improved; a lower rank number is better.
  • Head-to-head views compare institutions within the selected category and year using available official values.
